The PROTECT Series:
“Doing Business Amidst New Threats”
The first PROTECT series of conference with specialized exhibits was
held in 2005.
|
2005: |
Challenged by
increasing threats from terrorism in Southeast Asia after
9-11, the first conference organized by Leverage
International with the Anti-Terrorism Task Force was a
response to the need for strategic knowledge to improve
organizational structures to face possible business
disruptions caused by acts of terrorism. The conference with
its supporting exhibit was held at the World Trade Center
Metro Manila.
|
|
2006: |
The agenda for
the second series covered common areas of major concern by
different business sectors. Recognizing the significance of
the conference and the success of its first series, the U.S.
State Department sent the Executive Director of the Overseas
Security Advisory Council, together with its Regional
Security Officers in Manila and Jakarta to brief the
participants in the conference on the latest developments in
combating terrorism in the Region. A specialized exhibit led
by Hitachi Asia, IBM, Sony and others was put up to
complement the conference held at the World Trade Center.
|
|
2008: |
Following the
final approval of the Anti Terrorism Law which formalized
the creation of the Anti-Terrorism Council in mid 2007, the
2008 PROTECT series focused on cyberterrorism which had
developed to be a significant threat to doing business.
During the conference, the Philippine Institute for Peace,
Violence and Terrorism Research, a think-tank dedicated to
research on security and safety was launched. A specialized
exhibit complemented the conference which was held at Hotel
InterContinental.
|
|
2009: |
In recognition
of the emerging challenges of general safety and security
issues amidst the prevailing worldwide economic downtrend,
the conference series provided critical information for
business operators, law-enforcement authorities and security
professionals for facing new threats in the areas of
pandemics, cyber security, maritime safety, counterfeiting,
supply chain and business continuity.
|
|
2010: |
In the wake of
the increasing frequency and magnitude of destructions
arising from natural disasters resulting from climate
change, the focus of the 2010 series was on Disaster Risk
Reduction. It was recognized that destructions resulting
from natural phenomena are just as devastating and could
even be more disastrous than those caused by man-made
attacks.
|
|
2011: |
The 2011
series will examine past disasters for lessons learned, will
discuss present risks and what may be expected in the
future, engage stakeholders and strengthen communities and
businesses to pursue resiliency, and establish the roles of
Media, Telecom, IT and modern technologies for
private-public sector partnership in pursuing security and
safety for business and the community. |
